Building traffic with "Gateway Pages"

What's a "gateway page?"

It's a web page whose only purpose is leading people to another web page. It serves as a gateway to the other page.

Why do you want to set up gateway pages?

Two reasons I can think of:

  1. To design a page that a search engine "likes" better than the one you want people to ultimately go to. That is, it ranks higher on the search engines for a particular keyword.

  2. To have a different URL than a lot of other people who are promoting the same page. In other words, with a lot of people promoting the URL www.wholl-water.com, if you have a gateway page at www.mygateway.com it doesn't look like the same offer to people reading your ads.

Where do you put gateway pages?

You need your own website to host a gateway page. The Resources section of this site lists a number of free and low-cost places you could put gateway pages.

How do you design gateway pages?

Notice that I said "pages" not "page." You can have as many gateway pages as you want! If your goal is to get good search engine rankings, you will need multiple gateway pages (each search engine likes different pages).

There are two ways to use a  gateway page:

  1. Use it so that the user has to click on a link that takes them to your Wholly Water URL. Or...

  2. Reproduce your Wholly Water page on your own website (this is MUCH harder and, if you don't know how you would do this... DON'T!)

Now, the tricks to designing a gateway page could fill a book. And, they do! My friend Michael Campbell has a great book called Nothing But Net that's about his HIGHLY effective search engine and gateway page techniques. Click here to get a copy for only $38.

Another AWESOME book about promoting websites with search engines, gateway pages (and MUCH more) is called Making Your Site Sell (MYSS). It's only $24.95 CANADIAN (which is less than $17 US!). Click here to read some sample chapters or to order a copy.

Planet Ocean Communications sells a book called The Unfair Advantage On Winning The Search Engine Wars about designing pages that rank HIGH in the search engines, with monthly updates, that I HIGHLY recommend if you want to go that route. Their newsletter also includes GREAT resources for search engine submissions and tracking. Click here for more information.

You can also use the PRO version of Web Promotion Spider or WebPosition Gold to automatically create gateway pages that you then upload to your site. Both programs will also help submit your new gateway pages to search engines and directories. WebPosition Gold will track how well your gateway pages are doing in the search engines and give you advice on improving your gateway pages.

What do you do with gateway pages?

Simple. Promote them just like you would your Wholly Water URL as described on this site. But especially use your gateway pages for Search Engines and Directories promotions.
