Setting up a "junk email" account

When you do online promotions, there are MANY times where you don't want to give out your primary email address. Why? Because when you do certain promotions, you'll get A LOT of email back that could "clog up" your email inbox. So, you may want to have all that email get sent somewhere else. A "junk email" account.

There are 2 ways to do this:

1) If you do not have your own domain

Set up a free email account from http://www.hotmail.com/, http://www.juno.com/, http://www.yahoo.com/, http://www.rocketmail.com/ or any of the many other places that give away free email accounts.

Setting up a free account is EASY. All you do is fill out a form. Piece of cake.

Then, when you do certain promotions (that I'll mention in this site) you can use your free email account instead of your regular email address.

The only disadvantage to using these accounts is that it usually takes more time to read and/or sort through your email than it does when email comes directly to your regular account.

2) If you do have your own domain

When you have your own domain, you can do one of two things:

  1. If you can, set up additional "POP" accounts. For example, if your domain is mydomain.com, you can set up accounts like ads@mydomain.com that you use as your reply to address when you place classified ads or ffa@mydomain.com for your return address when you submit to FFA pages, et cetera.

Consult your web host or ISP about setting up additional POP accounts.

When you set up multiple POP accounts, you have to set up your email software check each one separately. Consult your email software's help file for info about doing this.
  2. You can also set up your account to forward ALL email to your main email address and let your email software "filter" the incoming mail into different folders. That way, you receive ALL your email at one time, and have your sort it after the fact.

Whichever you do, you'll find that having extra email accounts comes in handy.
